COMPANY PROFILE
Design for Health is an architectural and space planning firm specializing in the design of dental and medical office facilities. We have been located in Santa Cruz, California, since 1981. Since inception, our focus has been to create high quality office suites for our clients. Inspiration for our creative process comes from our individual client's requirements, the opportunities afforded by the project space or site, and our combined 70 years of professional experience in the field. Our work has run the gamut from a small 500 square foot remodel to a highly successful 12,000 square foot group dental practice. We have completed most projects with our in-house staff and have also worked effectively as a consultant or partner with other architects both inside and outside of this country.
We have been employing a sophisticated CAD system (computer aided design) since 1985, which facilitates the thoroughness and accuracy on which we pride ourselves. CAD has also enabled us to support our clients with 2d-3d integrated drawings which have significantly assisted in their comprehension of complex spaces during the early stages of design. Our casework (cabinet) drawings are 3d isometrics which are easy to read and evaluate.
We believe that good questions and clear communication are critical in facilitating the successful completion of our client's projects. Success means that the completed project is functionally effective, aesthetically pleasing, constructed with few problems, brought in on budget, and completed in a timely manner. Our own success has been built on our attention to these issues as evidenced by the referrals of our many satisfied clients.

Mitchell Goldstein, a licensed architect (New York), founded Design for Health in Santa Cruz, California in 1981. He grew up on the east coast where his father owned a small dental supply company. After graduating from Carnegie Mellon University in 1965 (B. Arch.) he apprenticed in architectural firms in Denver and San Francisco. He returned to New York to get his license and help grow his father's company into a 50 person establishment specializing in the development of "turn-key" offices for dentists. His responsibilities included the architectural, interior design and construction departments, while the firm also provided sales, repair service and leasing services.
After eight years in New York, Mitchell relocated to California. Following a short stint in construction development he began Design for Health on the strength of his experience in New York. He has lectured at the University of California at San Francisco as well as for study groups throughout Northern California. He lives with his wife, Carroll, in a home adjacent to his design studio, finally assuring him of a reasonable commute.

Ron Hedstrom is a licensed architect in both California and Colorado. His education includes a B.A. (1969 - math and physics) from North Park College of Chicago and a Masters in Education (1970) from Northwestern University. Following several years of teaching and coaching in Massachusetts, he "followed his dream", attending the University of Colorado at Boulder and receiving a Masters of Architecture degree in 1975. His early professional experience was with a small firm in Denver, finishing a major project which started as a graduate thesis and continuing with a number of small and medium sized health care facilities. From 1980 to 1983 he moved with his family to Gothenburg, Sweden, working with a large Swedish architectural firm and designing health care projects in Sweden, Africa and the Middle East.
Ron returned to his native California in 1984 and in 1989, responding to an ad that seemingly had his name written at the top, joined Design for Health. His prior work had been primarily with health care projects that were tending to become larger and more institutional in nature. In coming to Design for Health, he again had the opportunity to work directly with the people who would be using a facility, solving their individual problems. It was this problem solving nature of architecture, as well as the interpersonal relations with clients, which had brought him into the profession originally. Ron lives with his wife and four children in a small mountain community near Santa Cruz, enjoying the qualities of life that a wonderful family and rewarding profession can offer.
