Project Description
This is a second office for Dr. Matlack designed to expand his existing practice into a growing segment of his community. Unfortunately, the most attractive leasable space was substantially smaller than was desirable so that every effort had to be made to accommodate his needs in the most efficient manner possible, while at the same time respecting his wish to have an open and functional plan.
A 5-chair pinwheel bay area (photo #4) was designed as the most efficient clinical layout both for the way Dr. Matlack practices as well as for the shape of the available space. The focal point of the bay is a 2-tier central service island (photo #3) highlighted by an uplit octagonal soffit effectively painted to capture the local clouded skies. Another key design element is the sculpted maple burl wall (by local craftsperson Roger Heitzman) directly in front of the entry which sets an elegant mood for the rest of the suite (photo #1) and (photo #2). This wall was inspired by the desire to partially hide the stepped toddlers' play area in the reception room, as well as guide patients to the check-in counter adjacent to the on-deck area. The two existing steel columns were effectively used as an anchor for the aforementioned wall and as a support for a stand-up consultation counter (photo #3). Although the soffit over the reception desk follows its curve, it was deliberately set back to create more of an open feeling between reception and the clinical area (photo #1). |
